The 34th Year To Explore

I feel a stirring, a feeling of moving forward.

The itch to be outside, the yearning for something more.

The tingling of excitement when I touch a piece of gear.

I look outside and see mountains I’ve yet to explore.

The last two weeks have been a little wacky with Darwin’s film premiere and now I feel I can finally look forward and start adjusting to life post-film release. I have also turned another year older since my last post which always makes me reflect on my previous year on Earth. What have I done? Where have I been? And most importantly, what have I read?

Thus, I present to you dear reader a loosey-goosey list of doings for my 34th year on Earth….

3-4 day Bikepacking Trip in Arizona

Rim to Rim Hike of the Grand Canyon (yes, most permits are already secured)

7k Trail Race (this will be my first race on trail)

Half-Marathon (this will be my first trail half)

Summit Mount Elden

These are only a few things to share with you now, more to come later! What are your upcoming trips or plans for the year? Any good reads to share? Leave me a comment and let me know!

  1. Since you asked, I am training for my first marathon, I will be running the Yosemite Half,(which I was suppose to do last year but completely tore my ACL, MCL, Meniscus damage and a fractured tibia!), and since I can’t take 6 months off to hike the PCT I will be section hiking all spring and summer long. I doubt that will satisfy my desire to thru hike the PCT but it will hold me until I can manage the logistics of not working for that time. And by logistics I mean waiting until I retire….6 more years!
The ACL/MCL reconstruction surgery brought a new appreciation for my legs and well being. A new fire was ignited and I want to do it all! So I work now on building leg muscles that I lost during recovery and look for the limits my body ccan handle to get ready for a busy spring. I lost so much muscle my 10-year old grandson declared my trail name, “Chicken Legs”. I own that!
Let’s make it a great year! Let’s roll!

  2. I plan on doing a south rim to river hike in April. sign on doing the lake solitude hike at Grand Teton National Park in June. Then a rim to rim hike in October. All depends on whether or not they change the hat at Phantom Ranch by April. KeepSafe happy travels.

  3. Nice. Happy belated birthday..

I’m too afraid to do a marathon. However, I’m doing the JMT this Summer. I Iove hiking but hate running. 😜

  4. Aww man! That sounds great! The JMT has been in the back of mind for awhile! I would love to know how it goes!

  5. I have heard about this one a couple of times…totally on my read list now! Thanks for the suggestion!

  6. After quitting my job years ago I backpacked all summer then went down the North rim of the Grand Canyon and it knocked me out! Do not under-estimate the severity of that place. The ranger said that happens often and he let me stay w/o a permit instead of going to another site. Absolutely worth it and I’m sure you will prepare. My best trip ever though was a dory trip for 18 days down the full length of the river…..changed my life. Savor the silence and feeling at home in the ancient rocks.
